Bachelor of Design - Elective Architecture Studio Project 1 | Year 2, Trimester 3, 2020
MISSION: To serve gyoza in public space
BRIEF
This elective was an intensive two week subject that had an aim to create a food truck or food stall prototype perfect for selling gyoza in public space. With over 40 architect students across from 2nd to 5th year, we were split into 5 groups; What is gyoza? Making gyoza, Cooking gyoza, serving gyoza and selling gyoza. The project was inspired by the unique architecture and the interesting, one-of-a-kind restaurants and food windows found throughout Japan. This elective was a collaboration with Newcastle based architecture practice, Curious Practice.
INDIVIDUAL STATEMENT
The final prototype was made from left over ply wood, buckets and canvas creating a gyoza making machine. We designed everything from the packaging to the pully system which manoeuvred and delivered the gyoza-filled packaging from the cooktop to the serving section where it could be quickly served to customers. Every process was highly experimental. The project was a huge success and on the final day the prototype was used to create over 300 gyoza, feeding over 50 people. The prototype was placed into the bushland surrounding the architecture studio to weather and become a sculptural piece but a final model will be created in the future so we can carry out our mission of serving gyoza in public space at markets and events.
